Construction Layout This is the process of establishing and marking the position and detailed layout of new structures such as roads, buildings, and parking lots for subsequent construction. Wooden stakes are set in the ground with information written on them by the surveyor indication their horizontal and vertical location relative to an engineer's or architect's design. Surveyors determine where to set these stakes based on calculations from design plans provided by the licensed engineer or architect. Construction contractors then use this information to grade and build the improvements accordingly.
