Purpose of a Flood Elevation Certificate: Buildings in special flood hazard areas shown on Flood insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) may be damaged when flooding occurs. Some buildings flood frequently, while others get damaged by only the more severe events. If your home is in the 1 per cent annual chance floodplain, it has a 26 per cent chance of getting flooded over a 30-year period. This means it is about five times more likely to get damaged by flood than by a severe fire. An elevation certificate is a form of the National Flood Insurance Program to verify the risk of exposure to flood hazard. The certificate shows the elevations of the first floor, foundation, and surrounding land. It also shows the base flood elevation, i.e., the elevation of flood water calculated to occur during a 100-year flood. If you are within the mapped floodplain, but believe that your home may be elevated above the Base Flood Elevation, you should consider obtaining an Elevation Certificate. Key Benefits:
