Topographic Surveys A Topographic survey depicts the topography or the "lay of the land" of a specific parcel(s). Elevation measurements are taken with surveying instruments at several points on the property and plotted on a paper map. On said map lines, called "contours", are drawn to connect identical points of elevation. This type of survey can be used to show the affects of drainage of rainfall, or to place buildings or roadways on a piece of property.
